1784-1855. French Romantic sculptor. He
produced the low-relief scene on the Arc de
Triomphe, Paris, showing the capped figure of
Liberty leading the revolutionaries (1833,
known as The Volunteers of 1792 or The
Marseillaise). Rude was a supporter of
Napoleon, along with the painter David, and
in 1814 both artists went into exile in
Brussels for some years. Rude's other works
include a bust of David 1831 and the monument
Napoleon Awakening to Immortality 1854 (both
in the Louvre, Paris).
