  1. 1784-1855. French Romantic sculptor. He
  2. produced the low-relief scene on the Arc de
  3. Triomphe, Paris, showing the capped figure of
  4. Liberty leading the revolutionaries (1833,
  5. known as The Volunteers of 1792 or The
  6. Marseillaise). Rude was a supporter of
  7. Napoleon, along with the painter David, and
  8. in 1814 both artists went into exile in
  9. Brussels for some years. Rude's other works
  10. include a bust of David 1831 and the monument
  11. Napoleon Awakening to Immortality 1854 (both
  12. in the Louvre, Paris).
